It takes only a couple of minutes to test the pH of your water. There’s 3 main methods for testing your water at home:

  • pH meters
  • pH paper strips
  • pH testing drops

This test is simply for pH. Tests can be made in other ways to determine purity, contaminants and minerals. When these tests are made together, you can accurately understand what you’re drinking.

pH meters are great because they can be reused as many times as necessary. All you need to do is calibrate the machine and replace the batteries.

How to Use a pH Meter

You may need to refer to the instruction on your individual pH meter as your pH meter may operate differently.

Step 1: Calibrate Your pH Meter

Most meters require pre-calibration. This means testing the unit with a substance that has a pre-determined pH, to set the machine to know the range and to make sure the machine is working correctly.

Step 2: Collect Your Water Sample

Get a fresh sample of your water as being out in the open air will affect it’s pH level. Let the water’s temperature settle for a minute to get an accurate reading.

Step 3: Test Your Water Sample

Put your pH meter into the water. After a few moments, you’ll have an accurate reading with the pH of your water.

Step 4: Record Your Measurements

Keep a record of your measurements so you know there’s a problem.

Collect your water sample with enough to cover your whole pH test strip.

Step 2: Dip Your Test Strip Into The Water

Dip your entire pH test strip into the water.

Step 3: Wait To See The Results Of Your Experiment

The instruction booklet for your test strip will let you know how long to wait. Longer doesn’t mean a better result so follow the instructions closely.

Step 4: Compare The Colour Of Your Test Strip To The Colours In The Manual

Your instruction booklet will contain colours of different pH levels. This way you can understand the results.

Step 5: Record Your Measurements

It’s good to test regularly and track your measurements so you know if anything happens to your water.

A simple and accurate way to test your drinking water is using pH test drops. These work similarly to the paper test strips, but it comes as a liquid. Instead of waiting for your strip to change colour, you add a few of the pH test drops to the water and the water itself will change colour.

How to Use pH Test Drops

Testing with pH test drops is always simple.

Step 1: Collect Your Water Sample

Just as any test, you want to collect a fresh sample and wait a minute for the temperature to stabilise according to the instructions in your manual.

Step 2: Add pH Test Drops To Your Water Sample

Add your pH test drops according to the manufacturers instructions. Usually it’s just a few droplets. Some manufacturers only require 1 droplet.

Step 3: Observe The Colour Changes

The drops will quickly change colour. Use the colour key provided in your manual to determine the pH of your water.

Step 4: Record Your Measurements

It’s good to test regularly and track your measurements so you know if anything happens to your water.
